Startups love the idea of hiring a freelance marketers as a simple fix for growing problems, to take things off their plate, and get more out of what they’re doing.
I have a friend - promise, in this case that’s actually true haha - she’s a therapist and has put together a great digital product but no idea how to sell it.
I was wondering if she could find someone to set up ads for her and instead of getting a fixed pay they get a percentage of whatever she would make from it. Is that a thing at all? 😅
Hi Maria! Haha no problem, I believe you. (And thank you for the comment!)
This is a pretty tricky stage to handle. If she hasn't got sales yet, it means there may be some big question marks over the market, whether the product is exactly what folks want (and how they want it) and what channels/messaging work.
I personally lean towards encouraging entrepreneurs like your friend in this stage to see it as a learning opportunity :-) dive deep into a channel, learn it, then use it for themselves. Once it works, then hand it over. At least at that point, they've saved capital AND they won't get taken for a ride by an unscrupulous expert.
But to answer your question. That's definitely a thing. In eCommerce it happens more often that people will work on a % of ad spend. In same rare cases, people work for a % of the revenue but it can cost a lot + they're picky (I would be!) and you'd need to have something working first :-).
For your friend, if she's looking for an easy first step, it could simply be to share it on socials, email and with friends/family as much as possible for feedback first. Sell it on Gumroad perhaps. See what the feedback is!
